Quick Breakfast on the patio before we head to the Coloseo. The caffe e latte was phenominal and they offered tiny little mozarella balls... for breakfast. Kel has a pastry. And of course, this time offered a moment to do a map review by our navigator.
A different point of view of Piazza Navone when it is empty.
A view of the governmental building, Vittorio Emanuele II before the hustle of a Monday morning starts.
The excavation continues in the forum. There were multiple columns that were uncovered since we were here last. Although, not pictured, some of the columns were rather large and complete. I have to say, other than the heat, a graduate program digging up ruins in Rome would be pretty memorable.
The Colosseum had a beautiful display from the Constantine era of the equipment and the art of the gladiators that they created when not in training. Some of the necessities of the arena were on display like the lamps. In addition, some of the floor and wall work was on display.
The Underground tour of the Colosseum includes the area below where the animals were caged and the trap doors were sprung. The area also included many original facades like the travertine steps, brick flooring and the holes where the pullies moved the cages.
The acquaduct that filled the Colosseum for mock naval battles!
The upper level of the Colosseum.
About 10 feet behind Kelly was a baby Falcon? Luckily, we didn't meet mama.
We bought some original art from a local artist and made our way back toward the hotel for some lunch.
On the way back, I wanted to make two stops that we didn't do last time. The first was the church at the top of the tallest hill on Capitoline Hill. Kelly was in full support of this decision, because it is incredibly hot today in Roma. (By full support, Jamie means I was swearing at him and promising harm to several of his body parts and waiting for my heart attack to hit. I have to say after I got into the church, it was worth the possible heart attack to see the amazing architectural. details.)
Once through this non-suspect door of the medieval church named Saint Maria in Aracoeli , we found opulence. I set my camera to the quiet setting and low light with no flash and I was pleased with the results.
An original 3D piece in the church by Rafael.
Located right next to the Saint Maria in Araccoel, The elevator to the top of the governmental building, Vittorio Emanuele II , offered some stunning views.
For some reason, Kelly found the floral display in the design of the Italian Flag much to her liking
This was Kelly trying to catch her breath after a long, hot day. Fa caldo Fuori (It's hot outside.)
Prosecco changed our tune.
Wow, was this a good lunch! Caprese, mussels, clams, and my favorite, langostinos!
Local artists beginning to setup in the piazza.
A fun shot of the parking in Roma. The blue car wasn't driving by, it was double-parked.
After we got back to the room, we took a quick nap and then went out and grabbed some salumi, cheese, and some wine for a snack on the patio.
Go to 6/18/13
Great sights today! So wish I was there. The food looks amazing :)
